Online Therapy Saves you Time
Depending on where you live it can take 3 to 4 hours round trip to attend a therapy appointment.
Imagine a 9am appointment. You leave at 8am and commute for 45 minutes and hope the entire time that there are no accidents or bad traffic and that you get there on time. You then have 15 minutes to park and walk and get to your session from 9 to 10am. You take another 15 minutes to check out and walk back to your car, and then hit the road for another 45 minutes in hopes that you will be back at home or work by 11am. There goes most of your morning! And this is assuming you have your own mode of transportation and that you do not have to travel farther out for specialized treatment!
Online therapy allows you the freedom, flexibility, and convenience of receiving quality therapy from the comfort of your own home or office. Imagine what more you could do with a couple extra hours a week!
Online therapy makes it easier for you to make the time for mental health treatment in your life. It also has the potential to reach people who might not be able to attend face to face mental health services due to travel limitations, physical limitations, or other circumstances.
Online Therapy is Effective, it works!
A comprehensive examination of 22 research studies of online cognitive behavioral therapy found that online CBT helped reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety and that these gains were maintained at a 26 week follow-up. In addition, 5 of those studies compared online CBT directly with traditional, face-to-face CBT, and online therapy was just as effective as traditional therapy. It works! Another research study comparing online CBT with traditional in-person supportive therapy for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) found that those who received online CBT continued to show improvement six months later, unlike the comparison group (check it out here).
What do I need to do online therapy?
A computer, tablet, or smart phone with a camera and microphone. You need to be able to connect to the internet. You also need a private place where you can meet with your therapist without interruptions.
Do I need to be good with computers to use online therapy?
You just need to be able to access my virtual office at httpss://doxy.me/drcamila at the time of your appointment. Just click the link. You do not need to sign up for or download anything. (They do have a smart phone app if you prefer to use that).
Is online therapy secure?
Yes! Living Well CBT uses a secure, encrypted video conferencing platform by Doxy.me that is HIPAA compliant. We also have BAA agreements with our email provider (Hushmail) and our electronic health management system (Simple Practice). All of these services are encrypted and comply with HIPAA guidelines in order to protect your privacy.
How long are therapy sessions?
Your therapy sessions are based on the 50-minute clinical hour. You can discuss with your therapist and schedule for more time as needed. In addition, some specialty treatments, such as Prolonged Exposure Therapy, require a longer 90-minute session.
How do I pay for online therapy?
Living Well CBT accepts online payments of all major credit cards through our electronic health management system, which uses a PCI compliant secure credit card processor. We do not accept insurance but we can provide you with a super-bill to submit to your insurance on your own as an “out-of-network” provider.
What if I need more support than online therapy can provide?
There may be some cases when online therapy is not an appropriate fit. This includes if you are having an emergency or have active thoughts of suicidal or homicidal intent. If you have psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions, if you are using substances heavily, or if you need intense support, phone contact, or hospitalization. You and your therapist will work together to assess if online therapy is right for you.
