Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)
PE is a trauma-focused therapy designed to help you face your fears and move beyond your trauma. PE typically lasts 12-16 sessions and sessions are longer than your average therapy appointment at 90 minutes long. In PE you talk through your trauma story repeatedly, this is called imaginal exposure. You even record the sessions so that you can listen to it daily at home. You also practice going out and doing the things you have been avoiding (with structure and guidance of a therapist); this is called in vivo exposures. Imaginal and In Vivo exposures make up the core of PE. The goal is to help you retrain your mind and body to better cope with your triggers. This helps you to break the cycle of avoidance and overcome your triggers.
